The approach taken with other primary liver tumors is generally the same as for hepatocellular carcinoma . Patients with these other tumors are more likely to be candidates for surgery because they usually do not have underlying liver disease.
Angiosarcoma and Hemangioendothelioma
These diseases are less predictable than hepatocellular carcinoma and survival is variable.
• They may not have spread at the time of diagnosis and surgery should be considered.
• As in hepatocellular carcinoma, no systematic study of adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy has been done.
• Localized unresectable disease may respond to the same intravenous chemotherapy used for sarcomas and the
tumors may occasionally shrink enough to allow the surgeon to remove them completely.
• Advanced disease is approached in the same way as a sarcoma.
Adenocarcinoma
This type of tumor is approached in the same way as hepatocellular carcinoma. Its prognosis is similar.
